”キング・オブ・ロックステディ”Alton Ellisの妹であり、ジャマイカにおけるシンガーの1人。
キングストンのゲットー出身の女性たちへのチャンスが限られていた中、そういった障害や男性優位のレゲエ・ビジネスに介在する様々な問題も才能、プライド、静かなる威厳と共に乗り越えていったフィメールアーティスト。
1941年4月18日
鉄道会社で働く父親と果物屋を営む母親の元にAlton Ellisの妹としてトレンチタウンにて誕生。
18歳の時、Vere Johns JuniorのOpportunity HourにFrankie Lymonの「I’m Not A Know It All」のカヴァーを歌い、翌週のショーにも招待された。
その後、CS DoddのWorldisc「Loving Girl」の裏面に収録した「Eddie My Love」や、Duke ReidのTreasure Isleに「Hold Me Tenderly」「I’ve Been A Fool」、Prince BusterのWild Bellsに「Now And Forever More」を残すなど何人もの著名なプロデューサーたちと共にレコーディングを行った。
1964年
ジャマイカのTop Female Vocalistに選ばれ、シルバーカップを受賞。
Byron Leeのバンド、Dragonairesのシンガーとしてツアーを始めた。
60年代を通して、Prince Busterのためにロックステディ「Somebody Help Me」、CS Doddのための心地よい兄Alton Ellisとのデュエット「Easy Squeeze」などの楽曲を残した。
1970年
兄Alton Ellisとのカナダ・ツアーを終え、キングストンに戻った翌年Mikey ‘Junior’ Sandersと結婚。
Lee PerryとWinston RileyのためにMahalia Sandersと名乗りレコーディングを行った。
この時期は母親として5人の子供の世話に忙しかったが、Jimmy Radwayの元に残した「Hell And Sorrow」とClive Chinの元に残したMarlena Shawのカバー「Woman Of The Ghetto」でさらに人々を魅了した。
Tata Vega、Barbra StreisandまたはJose Felicianoの「Love Comes From The Most Unexpected Places」のカバー、Augustus Gussie Clarkeのプロデュースで彼のレーベル、Gussie 76からリリースされた「Unexpected Places」はジャマイカで大ヒットを記録し、イギリスでもレーベルHawkeyeからリリースされ同じくヒットした。
同年、兄Alton Ellisの「I’m Still In Love With You Girl」をサンプリングしたAlthea & Donnaの「Uptown Top Ranking」が世界的にヒットし、彼女はQueen TinyとしてBunny Leeのために同リズムの異なったヴァージョンのディージェイ・カットをリリースした。
「もっと出すんだ…違ったスタイルで」しかしこのヴァージョンは不運なことにレゲエ・オーディンスたちの間のみでヒットした。
80年代と90年代
離婚後、活動の拠点をアメリカへ移し、ニューヨークとマイアミで暮らした。
時折行われたライヴ・ショーは著者の強い興味を惹き、ある夜ロンドンのBouncing Ball Clubで当初彼女に無関心だった観客たちが完全に彼女のカリスマ性と透き通った声に飲み込まれてしまった。
1989年
ジャマイカに戻ったが、以前からの胃の感染症による体調不良により2000年10月19日、キングストンで眠りに落ちたまま死去した。
