ジャマイカを代表するレゲエシンガーのひとりとして時代を築いた重要人物。
1966年、スカ時代にStranger Coleと”Stranger & Ken”としてデビュー。その後はソロ歌手に転向し、Coxsone Dodd、Leslie Kong、ジャマイカ初女性プロデューサーSonia Pottingerら名プロデューサーと組んで作品を発表。「Everything I Own」が世界中で大ヒットとなる。
アメリカのR&Bシンガーに影響を受けた力強いソウルフルなヴォーカルは様々なスタイルを自在に操り、特にロックステディ期の活躍は目覚ましく”Mr.Rocksteady””The Voice of Choice”の愛称で知られる。
1948年3月22日
ジャマイカ、キングストンのデンハム・タウンで生まれ、音楽一家で育った影響により彼は音楽への興味を示し、母親と姉から指導を受ける。
8歳の時、Demham Primary Elementary Schoolに在学中ながら歌唱コンテストで初めて優勝。最初に影響を受けたのは地元のアーティストOwen Grayだったが、彼が特に愛して止まなかったのはDrifters、Mahalia Jackson、Wilson Pickett、Temptations、Ortis Reddingである。
1963年
スカ時代、近所の友人 Wilburn Stranger Coleと”Stranger & Ken”としてキャリアをスタート。
サウンドシステムを運営していたSir Mikeの元で初めてのレコーディングを行い「Hush Baby」をリリース。
その後、Stranger & KenはVincent ‘Randy’ ChinとDuke ReidのTreasure Isleでもレコーディングを経験した。のちにレアアイテムとなるキラー・スカを立て続けにリリースした。
1965年
CS DoddのStudio Oneでレコーディングを行う。
「World’s Fair」や「All Your Friends」などが次々と話題となり、「Artibella」は同年のスマッシュ・ヒットとなった。彼の活躍をそばで見ていたCS Doddは彼をソロアーティストとへと導く。
その後「Crying Over You」「I will forgive you but I’ll never forget…」や「Come Running Back」などスカからロックステディへの変革期にリリース。
1967年
前年にヒットした最初のロックステディの1つとされるRoy Shirleyの「Hold Them」をCS Doddの元でリメイクした「Feel Good」をリリース。この楽曲はCS Doddがロンドンを拠点にスタートさせた新しいStudio Oneの記念すべき1枚目の7インチ・リリースとなった。
Wailersがハーモニーを担当した「Train Is Coming」、「My Heart Is Gone」「Just Another Girl」「Thinking」「Moving Away」などがヒットし、Studio Oneで成功し続けた。
Bob Andyの「I Don’t Want To See You Cry」のカヴァーで彼は”Mr. Rock Steady”の名を手に入れた。
1967年
Studio Oneのハウス・バンド、Soul Vendorsのフィーチャー・アーティストとしてAlton Ellisと共にイギリス・ツアーを回る。
同年彼はEurovision優勝者、Sandie Shawのポップ・ソング「Puppet On A String」を独特のビターなバラードにリメイクさせた。
1968年-
CS Doddの元で「Mr Rock Steady」「More Of Ken Boothe」を、2年後にリリースした「A Man & His Hits」と3枚のアルバムを残す。
Studio Oneに在籍しながらも彼は、Sonia PottingerのレーベルGay Feetに「Say You」を、Phil Prattのレーベル Jon Tomには「The One I Love」「Left The Water Running」を、Keith Hudsonの元で「Old Fashioned Way」を録音した。
「Ken Bootheはすでに”Mr Rock Steady”という名で呼ばれていた。彼は意図も簡単に”Mr Reggae”と”Mr Soul”の王冠を2つ同時に手にすることが出来た」by Louis L Gooden

CS Doddの元を離れる
1971年
Lloyd Charmers Tyrellとの楽曲「Rasta Never Fails」をLloyd Charmers TyrelのレーベルSplashからリリース。Lloyd Charmers Tyrelの「Black, Gold & Green」とSyl Johnsonの「Is It Because I’m Black」はまたもヒットを記録した。
彼はプロデューサーPhil Prattと再度活動を始め「I’m Not For Same」「Artibella」のセルフ・リメイクを制作、その後彼1番のヒット「Silver Words」をWinston ‘Niney The Observer’ Holnessの元に残した。
しかしこの2人の関係は長くは続かず、Winston ‘Niney The Observer’ Holnessは若手のDennis Brownを録音し始め、彼はFederal Recordsに援助されていたLloyd Charmers Tyrelの元へと戻った。
1974年
「Everything I Own」はレゲエのチャートでトップに輝き、イギリスのNational Chartで念願の1位を獲得。この楽曲は1972年にDavid Gatesが亡き父親と彼のグループ、ブレッツへのトリビュートとして書いたとされるものをリメイクしたものである。
Lloyd Charmersプロデュースの「Crying Over You」もまたイギリスのNational Chartの上位入りを果たした。
1987年
Culture Clubの前リード・シンガーBoy Georgeが「Everything I Own」をカヴァーしたことにより、この曲は2度目のヒットを果たした。
1995年
Shaggyとグラミー賞に輝いたアルバム「Boombastic」で「Train Is Coming」を再演し、この楽曲は映画”Money Trainのサウンドラックにも起用される。
1999年
The Reggae/Soca Living Legend賞を受賞。
2012年
「Artibella」がSnoop Doggにカバーされ国際的なスマッシュ・ヒットになった。
2000年
Bob Marley Lifetime Achievement賞を受賞
2003年
